Chasing green backs
River vs Lake Tourney
Chasing Green backs in tourneys is full of ups and downs this year has brought me some super highs like KBF open i pre fished and found a winning bag but on tournament day the bass just weren’t there. I have been what some might call a prefsh queen.
…
I pre fished for this tourney and chose to fish at Winton Woods but you could fish Miami Whitewater and Sharon woods too. I spent three days pre fishing and never really finding them, i caught fish but nothing very big. My buddy Bert Guthaus brought up fishing the river and after not really getting into the fish at Winton Woods I was liking the idea but as tournament got closer we decided on hitting Winton Woods.
The day started with registration and a lot of people decided to fish Winton with us the start was pretty packed as almost everyone started at the same point. Everyone was casting at any close by structure and there is a culvert that at least 20 people fished and I watch Brett come behind everyone to just pitch a lipless crankbait and pull out a 19.75 bass! this bass proves to be the big bass for the tourney and propels Bert on his way to second place. What A way to start your day.
I put on a cheap BPS floating worm and start pounding structure and under bush’s prove to be where I found all my big bass. In one cove that was near the put in and was pounded in the morning, i came threw around 10.30, there was a couple fishing from the bank telling me “ You know all your buddies have already come through, there’s no fish left.” I thanked him for the tip but proceed to fish as there were so many people fishing Winton that there was no clean water left to fish. In this vove their was one bush in the cove sticking out and I had already snag a 17.5 bass under another bush, this bush gave me one spot to toss my bait a very small opening and WHAM! 17 inch bass I quickly take my picture, the couple from bank is rooting me on. I toss in the exact same spot WHAM! 15.5 inch bass so I throw to the bush again and WHAM! another 15 inch bass and i throw again and a 13 inch bass comes out, the magic bush. I fish the cove for another hour but no more fish but this gave me a decent bag for the day. by the end of the day of pounding wood structure I catch 22 bass.
I end up getting 4th only a 1.25 inches off the leader it was awesome to get a good tourney day instead of a pre fishing day and to get to see Bert who has worked so hard at fishing tourneys place 2nd and get big fish just topped off my day.
