Not being smallmouth fisherman i was a little apprehensive about signing up but a little nudging from my good friend Dan Bell change my mind. I only knew of one or possibly two spots to catch quality small mouth so it was to freshwater weekend we decide to hit the great miami river and this is the beginning of me falling in love with the great miami.
First day produced 30 plus fish as they were crushing the crank bait even had 2 smallies on the crank bait twice. 5 miles of new to me water realizing what the smallie bite felt like really started to open my eyes to what a great game fish they are and what a great fishery the Great Miami River is.
Day two more new water 5 more miles, 53 fish, 3 different species and a lot of snagging luress in branches. The fish were relating to wood in 4 to 6 ft of water Tubes were the main lure working and today I had Bert with me in his Hobie Pro angler 12 what a great river boat big platform to stand and fish from and I was really happy with the Hobie Outback Brian Tacy strictly sail loaned me.
Day Three my wife gave me the go ahead to chase down the kicker fish i was missing i begin just by picking a spot from google maps. A nice parking lot greeted me at 6:30 in the morning i set out and head up river and the riffle slog begins 2 miles of pulling my yak threw riffle after riffle later I’m in a nice stretch lots of wood and boulders. Floating worm texas rigged fishing it in the wood and just outside the wood was bringing 15 incher after 15 incher with two fish bending my hook and getting off, this is how the cookie crumbles hose were the kickers I was looking for.
Day four brings me to spot I have fished before and feeling more confidence from the prior days experience, i have never chased these fish this much i have gain a ton of knowledge in the past 3 days. This day starts off with 17 incher which i needed and after a short time another 17 incher hammered my bait and was running me in circles ripping drag like a big striper she was so pretty even though she had a bad attitude. Fishing my floating worm around any structure i can find brought me fish after fish, smallmouth, largemouth, spots, and carp. This day just blew my mind well over 100 fish were caught had to retie constantly.
The Great Miami river is just a amazing fishery I highly recommend getting out on this great local resource we have. I ended up in 6th not ever boating a kicker fish. I feel as I won, getting to know and falling in love with the Great Miami River and finding a new sport fish to be addicted and learning new techniques. Good friends and good times.
